Stretching all the way from the USA in the north to Guatemala and Belize in the south, Mexico's the glue that links the North and South American continents together. The country’s two million square kilometres pack in everything from mega cities and tiny pueblo towns to jungles and Mayan relics. But, for holidaymakers at least, the coastal areas hold the main appeal – from the luxe hotels of Los Cabos to the country's nightlife capital, Cancun. Mexico’s eastern edge sidles up to the Caribbean Sea. Cancun's the best place to stay for some. It’s home to a 22-kilometre belt of white sand, shopping malls, and an after-dark scene to rival Rio. As you head down the coast, Mexico begins to shed its tourist skin. Playa del Carmen offers everything Cancun does, but in smaller portions. In Riviera Maya, meanwhile, tropical jungle and Mayan ruins start to appear in the picture. What they all have in common is a string of All Inclusive hotels that cover every whim – from Hard Rock properties that throw in luxury extras to places like the Grand at Moon Palace, which has a waterpark and laser tag for kids. Just so you know, the beaches on this stretch of coastline sometimes experience increased levels of seaweed – called sargassum. It’s influenced by the weather and ocean currents. If your hotel’s affected, the staff will do everything they can to clear it.
Mexico’s west coast's lapped by the Pacific Ocean and boasts All Inclusive resorts that range from laidback to luxury. The beaches around Puerto Vallarta mirror the quality of those on the opposite side of the country, with an added dose of calm. And away from the sand, abseiling and zip-lining circuits are strung through the Sierra Madre Mountains. Further north, Los Cabos brings a sense of star quality to the tip of the Baja California Peninsula.
